Fitness tracker maker Fitbit said on Tuesday that it would release its first waterproof wearable, the Fitbit Flex, at the end of the year.
The Flex will be the company’s first wearable that has a waterproofing element, with an IP67 rating, which means it is impervious to water.
It is powered by an embedded, waterproof sensor and can swim for up to 8 metres underwater.
The company said it was developing the Flex “with the purpose of enabling the widest possible range of activities and activities that can be done outdoors, in a way that can also be connected to the internet”.
The Flex is priced at £159 ($190) and will be available to purchase in a few months time.
Fitbit, which has made an effort to get into fitness in recent years, was founded by former Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 2008.
Its first product, the Jawbone Up, was a wearable smartwatch and later sold to the Chinese company Xiaomi for $1bn ($1.8bn).
The Flex, which will be made in the UK, will have a waterproof element, a “lightweight” casing and will feature a “slightly larger” battery.
“The Flex’s waterproofing is a feature that will make it easier to wear for outdoor use and also enable the use of a water repellent, which we’ve been working on for a while,” said John Mascaro, Fitbit’s vice president of product management.
“We’re also introducing a second battery for use in the Flex’s watch band that is a bit larger, which also provides the flexibility to use the Flex with other water-resistant devices.”
The Flex features a waterproof, metal body, which is covered by a mesh screen.
The Flex also has an IP68 rating, meaning it is resistant to water, dust and salt.
There are several different water resistance features on the Flex.
One of them is the ability to protect the Flex from “water splashes and splashes of other water products, such as water spray, from the outside world”.
This can be useful when wearing the Flex in hot environments, or when using it with a smartphone.
When you strap the Flex to a wrist, you’ll see a barometric pressure sensor that measures the temperature of the water in the water around the device.
It measures pressure in the range of 0.4 to 1.0 millibars.
In addition to the IP68 rated waterproofing, the Flex also includes a micro-USB charging port, which provides up to 10 hours of power for up a phone.
“The new Flex will enable us to further improve the Fit’s experience of wearing and being active outdoors,” said Mascarro.
Other features on offer in the new Flex include a new “lifestyle” mode, which allows you to set different activities to be active on a regular basis, including swimming, walking and cycling.
There is also a “vibration tracker” which measures how the Flex reacts to vibration, and a new workout mode that allows you “to run, jog or do other fitness activities”.
The new Fitbit is available for pre-order now, with availability expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year.
