Watchdog finds Samsung’s new motion sensor to be “very capable” but could take some getting used to.
The Samsung motion sensor, which Samsung is calling the “motion bar,” is a large circular display that can track your heart rate and body temperature, and is being developed by a group of researchers at MIT.
It’s been tested on animals to see if it’s a useful fitness tracker, and Samsung says it’s “currently being tested on our customers and our own research.”
But, the company’s researchers caution that it’s still early days, and that it has “no clear indication of its performance” on human beings.
If the sensors are useful, it could be used to track things like body temperature and heart rate, which could potentially help us understand why people exercise and improve their health.
“We’ve never done anything like this before,” said Jia-Fang Chen, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, who led the research.
“What we’re looking for are some really big questions that we haven’t been able to answer before.”
How do you use it?
Samsung says the sensor can detect your heartrate, blood pressure, oxygen consumption, and other health information.
It also uses the data to track steps and calories burned, as well as your distance traveled.
For instance, it can track a person walking for three minutes and then give a score for the distance traveled and the number of steps taken.
The company is also experimenting with whether it can identify the difference between a person’s heartbeat and the pulse it produces.
So far, the sensors aren’t able to tell if a person is breathing or not, and it’s not clear how the sensor will differentiate between someone’s heartbeat while they’re sitting down and while they’ve just gotten up.
How long will it last?
Samsung plans to test the sensors on people for six months, which is much longer than the six months it took for other fitness trackers to be tested.
It will also offer a free trial for those who want to test it.
